Beginning Steel Band

This band is for students age 13 and up who are interested in learning the steel drums. We will perform a wide variety of music, including soca, calypso, reggae, rock, funk, and Brazilian. The beginning steel band features the following instruments:

Tenor Pan: This single steel drum plays the melody on all of the songs, and may occasionally improvise a solo.

Double Seconds: This set of two steel drums is played by one performer, and can harmonize the melody, as well as “strum”, similar to a guitar part.

Bass Pans:These six 55 gallon oil barrels are played by one performer! As the name suggests, the bass pans play the bass line in the music.

Marimba: The marimba is another voice in the steel band, complimenting the bass line and strumming patterns similar to a guitar part.

Drum set/Auxiliary Percussion: The drum set and auxiliary percussion are called the “engine room” of a steel band. Just like in a rock band or jazz band, they keep the beat and set the style of each tune.

The steel band is made up of 6 students: 4 who will play the steel drums and marimba, and 2 who will share the drumset and auxiliary percussion. The 4 steel drums players will alternate playing one of the steel drums and the marimba.

Because these are all percussion instruments, students who are studying percussion in high school may find them easier than those who aren't – however, anyone who can read music is welcome to join!

Found Instruments LAB

We will address proper playing techniques, general musicality, and performance techniques.Start your own percussion ensemble without spending a fortune on equipment… Show your friends how easy it can be to make music… Demonstrate for others, how anything can be turned into a musical instrument!
